Chief Education Officer - Instruction #1699

Duties

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, provides leadership and advocates for equity for all students; interprets and executes the policies and expectations of the State Board of Education as directed; oversees and administers educational programs within the centers of Teaching & Learning, Specialized Instruction, and Data, Accountability & Assessment; serves as a liaison between departments and outside educational and professional institutions to share information and collaborate on efforts for the benefit of the students of Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education.

  • Represents and speaks accurately on behalf of the State Board of Education to Illinois school districts, educational organizations, other state/federal agencies, committees, and the public concerning the interpretation of Agency policies, procedures, or actions.
  • Intentionally seeks to model collaboration between cross functional departments focused on aligning all of our instructional education departments to operational educational departments to improve student learning according to ESSA.
  • Develops and recommends policies, programs, and procedures to improve our instructional services to school districts by strengthening our delivery of services through the centers of Teaching & Learning, Specialized Instruction, and Data, Accountability & Assessment.
  • Creates systems and structures in regard to delivering job embedded professional development through cycles of inquiry through our professional development offerings.
  • Ensures that every district that is awarded grant funds for professional development include cycles of inquiry in their scope and sequence of professional development offerings.
  • Works with staff in ISBE to develop additional grants, contracts, and budgets to increase partnerships that help us recruit, retain and support our teacher recruitment efforts to staff districts and schools. 
  • Develops a five year plan to close the teacher shortage gap.
  • Develops and creates leadership development opportunities for Executive Directors and Directors with the expressed purpose of increasing our staffs' leadership capacity. 
  • Provides our staff with a vertical leadership pathway as a way to developing an ISBE leadership pipeline.
  • Creates and develops a statewide career and technical education program that focuses on engaging our most vulnerable students according to ESSA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • Three to five years of educational experience either in a district or state department.
  • Three to five years of administrative/supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Experience with managing district or state professional development initiatives.
  • Strategic thinker.
