Program Coordination for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Program (Principal Consultant #1955. 1956, 1957)

Duties

The Educator Effectiveness department seeks to add new talent to its team! This department oversees educator licensure and professional development, educator preparation, and other educator pipeline initiatives that seek to recruit and retain high quality educators in our state’s public schools. Reporting to the supervisor, this position will lead administration and growth efforts for the state’s National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) program. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is assuming oversight of the program beginning July 1, 2026. This position, along with a small team of individuals, will work closely with NBPTS and ISBE management to develop and refine processes for recruiting, supporting, and providing incentives to National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTS) and prospective NBCTS. ISBE seeks innovative, results-focused individuals to design, develop, implement, and support the program. During recruitment events, daytime travel and some overnight travel may be expected. During less busy periods, this position will support and lead other initiatives related to educator licensure, preparation, recruitment, and retention, including review and approval of applications for licensure.

  • Lead and participate in projects and tasks to administer the state’s National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) program, which may include but is not limited to communicating with current and prospective National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTS) and other relevant community members about eligibility for stipends, mentoring, or other opportunities.
  • Promoting the NBPTS program at conferences and meetings throughout the state, partnering with community members such as regional offices of education, teachers’ unions, and school districts for program recruitment.
  • Developing materials and resources for current and prospective NBCTS.
  • Creating and leading professional learning opportunities.
  • Working with management to establish annual budgets and project plans.
  • Logging and processing applications, invoices, and other records.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to evaluate program success and inform continuous improvement.
  • Maintaining contracts with external vendors, and developing trainings and other NBCT support networks.
  • Evaluate applications for licensure and lead or participate in other educator pipeline initiatives as directed by management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant professional experience. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • Experience planning, implementing, and monitoring projects, goals, or initiatives from inception through conclusion.
  • Experience serving as a mentor, facilitator, liaison, or as a candidate participant in a local or regional National Board for Professional Teaching Standards candidate cohort offered through the National Board Resource Center at Illinois State University.
  • Current National Board Certification.
  • Skilled in paying attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide creative solutions to problems and learn new procedures quickly.
  • Strong writing skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to successfully develop, execute, and monitor projects with a continuous-improvement mindset.
  • Ability to travel to attend recruitment and promotional events throughout the state.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team to accomplish goals.
  • Master's degree. 
  • Experience developing and delivering professional development to educators.
  • Experience using data for program evaluation.
  • Experience developing budgets, expenditure reports, and maintaining accurate record-keeping. 
  • Experience leading recruitment efforts for employment or programmatic purposes. 
  • Experience developing public-facing communication materials (e.g. reports, guidance documents, or one-pagers.) 
  • Experience working with additional NBPTS initiatives.
