About the Position:

The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for the individual and group speech/language therapy for Academy students.  The Speech Language Pathologist is expected to attend IEP meetings as needed and to present goals and updates as requested for students.  The Speech Language Pathologist position is part of the IEP team for students requiring Speech and/or Language services.   Therefore, the ability to collaborate and communicate is vital.

Provides evaluations and therapeutic intervention for students exhibiting speech and/or language delays. Collaborates with parents & public-school personnel re: incoming, progress of and/or returning students, as needed and maintains professional boundaries and demeanor. This position will work within the school program serving youth placed in a special education therapeutic day school.   The ideal staff member not only understands the particular challenges experienced by these students but has a particular affinity for working with special education youth.

Qualifications

Qualifications: 

Education and Experience: 

  • Master’s Degree in Speech/Language Pathology.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology preferred.
  • Certified Speech and Language Therapist with Illinois State Board of Education or Licensed Speech and Language Pathologist.  
  • Experience with children with Autism, children exposed to trauma and skill in signing are highly desirable. 

Skill Requirements: 

  • Relate effectively to children and their parents.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within an IEP team.
  • Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences in children, staff, and families served.
  • Knowledge of childhood trauma.
  • Strong organization, record keeping, and assessment skills.
  • Ability to handle job related matters in a professional, diplomatic and confidential manner.
  • Ability to use computer technology.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Hearing and speaking ability which allows for effective oral communication of information.
  • Ability to physically transport self and students to various locations.
  • Physical and emotional stamina to effectively handle job related problems and stress.
  • Physical ability to initiate and assist in physical restraints.
