Head Varsity Football Coach

Duties

Head Varsity Football Coach

The High School Football Coach is responsible for leading and managing the school’s football program, fostering athletic development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and academic success among student-athletes. This position involves planning and directing training sessions, developing game strategies, supervising athletes, and promoting a positive, inclusive team culture aligned with the school’s mission and values.


Key Responsibilities

Coaching & Player Development

  • Plan, organize, and supervise practice sessions focused on skill development, conditioning, and safe training techniques.

  • Teach fundamental and advanced football skills, including offense, defense, and special teams strategy.

  • Evaluate player performance and provide constructive feedback to support improvement.

  • Promote teamwork, discipline, effort, and sportsmanship at all times.

  • Ensure all activities follow appropriate safety standards and concussion protocols.

Program Management

  • Develop seasonal goals, game plans, and practice schedules.

  • Oversee all aspects of game preparation, including scouting opponents and reviewing film.

  • Manage team roster decisions, including tryouts, player placement, and playing time considerations.

  • Coordinate equipment inventory, maintenance, and uniform distribution.

  • Collaborate with athletic directors, assistant coaches, trainers, and school staff.

Student Support & Academic Expectations

  • Monitor student-athletes’ academic progress and support the school’s academic policies.

  • Encourage balance between athletics, academics, and personal responsibilities.

  • Promote character development, leadership, and positive behavior on and off the field.

Communication & Community Relations

  • Communicate regularly with student-athletes, families, and administration regarding schedules, expectations, and team updates.

  • Represent the football program at school and community events.

  • Build positive relationships with parents, boosters, and the broader community to support the football program.

Compliance & Professionalism

  • Adhere to school district policies, athletic association rules, and state high school athletic regulations.

  • Maintain current coaching certifications, CPR/first aid training, and background checks.

  • Model professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior.

Qualifications

 

  • Prior coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or competitive youth level preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of football fundamentals, strategy, and safety practices.

  • Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes.

  • Effective communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel for games.

  • (Optional) Teaching certification or ability to hold a school-based position, if required by the district.
