Grade 3 Challenge Teacher

Duties

JOB SUMMARY:     Performs functions to instruct students on enriched and differentiated curriculum ensuring each individual is provided with the knowledge, proficiencies and experiences necessary to become mature, able and socially responsible
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Design high-content, engaging work for students.
  • Assist in conducting assessments to determine student eligibility for gifted services programs.  Review and interpret scores.
  • Schedule, plan and instruct students on District and State Standards aligned curriculum in classroom, small groups and individually.
  • Establish a safe atmosphere conducive to a positive learning environment. 
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental levels and interests of their students.
  • Design and enrich lessons, curriculum, materials and resources as needed to meet individual student’s needs and varying levels of progress.
  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to evaluate student progress.  Develop intervention strategies, based on review of student assessments that ensures student success and growth.
  • Set and communicate clear expectations for classroom behavior and school environment by applying positive reinforcement and/or behavior modification techniques as needed.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing regularly with parents and students on progress.
  • Meet regularly and work collaboratively with other Teachers to plan, accommodate, implement and assess differentiated lessons and progress.
  • Consult and provide advice to staff on issues relating to enriched curriculum or instructional methods.  Assist with development and instructional delivery of differentiated lessons.
  • Maintain and update materials contained within the gifted program resource library.
  • Attend and actively participate in building and District Teams to facilitate early involvement and resolution of academic or behavior problems.
  • Collaborate with other staff in planning, modifying, enhancing and implementing curriculum, school and District goals and objectives.
  • Enforce and support District and School policies, philosophies and objectives with students and parents.
  • Participate in staff development and school improvement activities in order to maintain professional growth.  Plan and implement best practices and strategies.
  • Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day.

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Applicants must hold the appropriate State of Illinois Teaching Certificate
  • Six graduate hours in Gifted Education and Summer Institute for Gifted Education (preferred) 

EXPERIENCE

  • Successful experience teaching gifted students

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Skill in diagnosing, prescribing, assessing student learning, and appropriate record keeping
  • Effective behavior management skills
  • Ability to structure a classroom to maximize student learning
  • Effective communication skills
