Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Library Specialist, the Elementary Librarian – Media Specialist serves as instructional resource consultant and materials specialist to pupils, teachers, and administrators.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive library media program aligned with the instructional goals of the assigned school.
- Integrate a variety of instructional resources—both print and digital—into the school's centralized library media program to support teaching and learning.
- Organize and maintain library collections and resources to ensure efficient accessibility for students, staff, and other users.
- Select and curate high-quality print and non-print materials that support the curriculum and diverse learning needs of students.
- Provide instruction to students and staff on effective use of the library media center and its resources, promoting information literacy and research skills.
- Promote awareness of library services, resources, and programs through regular communication and engagement with the school community.
- Stay current with educational research, instructional trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in library media and information science.
- Supervise and support students in both structured library activities and in the absence of the classroom teacher as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the school’s instructional mission and library media goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong ability to assess and address issues related to risk, liability, safety, and occupational hazards within a school or library setting.
- Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, evaluate options, and implement effective solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally to students, staff, and community stakeholders.
- Proficient in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other relevant educational technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and professional working relationships with colleagues, district staff, external partners, and the public.
- Exhibits professionalism and strong leadership qualities, with the capacity to inspire and guide students and staff in the use of library media resources.
Experience:
- Demonstrated training and practical experience in library science, media services, or related library procedures.
- Prior experience in an elementary and/or secondary school setting, with a strong understanding of age-appropriate instructional practices and resource needs.
- Proven ability to model professionalism through effective communication, positive attitude, professional appearance, and ethical character.
- Experience supporting both students and staff in accessing and utilizing library media resources to enhance teaching and learning.
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree (required)
- Illinois Professional Educator License with LMS endorsement (required)
Physical Requirements:
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
- Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree
