JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Classroom Teacher K-5 grade
LOCATION: Steger Primary Center, Steger Intermediate Center, Columbia Central School

JOB SUMMARY:
To create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education, in accordance with each student ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To excel in this role, the individual must meet the following key responsibilities:
- Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, and health to students in a classroom, using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate and timely records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Creates and effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.

- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional tasks as assigned.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: The role requires frequent walking and standing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is generally stable, with minimal exposure to unusual temperatures, noise, or hazards. The position requires extended and non-traditional hours to fulfill job duties, as well as participation in organization-sponsored events and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
- K-9 endorsement
LICENSES/CREDENTIAL: Valid Illinois Teacher's License (PEL).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Employment begins on August 1 each year and ends two weeks after the final day of the academic year for students and teachers.
EVALUATION: The performance of this role is evaluated according to the Board's policy on evaluating professional personnel.
