Function / Position Summary
As an integral part of a school’s instructional leadership team, the special education administrator is responsible for overseeing instruction in specialized programs that provide educational assistance to children with disabilities under the 14 eligibility categories. With the goal of facilitating the special education processes that are needed to maximize the growth potential of all students with exceptional learning needs, special education administrators are highly trained and experienced educators with specialized certification; thereby providing appropriate educational opportunities and services for staff and students receiving special education services while ensuring compliance implementation and administration of programs, policies, procedures and regulations.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and evaluate instructional and curricular programs to ensure quality education.
- Plan and implement an observation cycle for 1st and 2nd year certified educators to assist staff in reaching their professional potential and to increase the quality of instruction through coaching and mentoring.
- Collaborate with district and building administrators and staff to ensure that students with special needs receive an appropriate, rigorous education.
- Provide materials, instructional assistance, and in-service activities to assist teachers in strengthening instruction and assessment practices at the building and district level.
- Ensure a safe, healthy and appropriate learning environment for the children and staff.
- Participate/consult in manifestation determination review (MDR), initial eligibility, placement change meetings and assist in facilitating meetings involving requests for additional support (AT, Equipment or Para support), and potential contentious meetings with advocates or attorneys.
- Ensure that each student is provided an individualized program which best meets his/her identified needs.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state mandates to provide a full continuum of services for special education students.
- Communicate regularly with parents and others in the community to develop and maintain a positive school-community relationship.
- Attend and participate in various committees which facilitate and support District-wide and departmental initiatives and engage all stakeholders in the District.
- Assist in the planning and facilitation of professional development (ie. by school, network, New Teacher Orientation, DUEA, etc.)
- Assist and support buildings with staffing needs (recruiting, posting vacancies, interviewing, etc)
- Other duties as assigned.
