POSITION TITLE: Special Education Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
SUPERVISED BY: Director of Special Education
SUPERVISES: Speech-Language Pathologists
POSITION GOAL: To provide professional development, supervision, and coordination for special education programs and interpret these programs to school personnel, parents, and community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide professional development relating to the IEP process for district staff.
- Provide professional development relating to special education initiatives and facilitation of related programs.
- Coordinate the special education programs.
- Participate in all case study conferences for students referred for evaluation.
- Participate in the development of individualized education programs for students eligible for special services.
- Work with school personnel to place students in special education classes according to state-approved procedures.
- Coordinate and facilitate transportation services for special education students.
- Assist in the selection, evaluation, and assignment of special education teachers.
- Coordinate development, implementation, and revision of special education curriculum.
- Ensure that all IEP procedures and annual reviews of students’ individualized education programs are conducted within mandated timelines.
- Supervise the implementation of entrance and exit of students according to adopted special education criteria.
- Coordinate student/teacher programs.
- Counsel parents of eligible students in securing necessary aid from various clinics and agencies.
- Ensure that all federal and state guidelines for students with disabilities are met.
- Assist in preparation of required state and federal reports.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by Director of Special Education or their designee.
KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to create, develop, and implement professional development for staff
- Knowledge of special education law
- Ability to coordinate and work collaboratively with all stakeholders
- Demonstrate strong communication and public relations skills
- Ability to understand school reports and records
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- General school/Office environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Light lifting may be required
- Travel to and from school and/or meeting sites required by personal vehicle
