JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title:      School Counselor (2 positions)
Department:         Building Personnel
Location:              Evans Junior High School / Kingsley Junior High School
Reports to:           Principal/Assistant Principal
FLSA Class:         Exempt
FTE:                      1.0


SUMMARY

This position provides guidance to students and performs a wide variety of tasks focused on moving students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.


DUTIES

  1. Provides a constant support system to the student in order to help each student achieve a successful emotional, social and educational adjustment.
  2. Eases the transition from elementary to junior high and from junior high to high school by providing support and orientation for each student.
  3. Provides personal counseling for students.
  4. Makes referrals if the student is in need of specialized services.
  5. Acts as a monitor of the students’ overall academic success and to make such changes or interventions as necessary to help students receive a good education.
  6. Acts as a liaison among teachers, administrators, parents and students by providing information and formulating problem-solving alternatives when the need arises.
  7. Provides vocational guidance for making appropriate choices in course selection and preparation for post high school alternatives.
  8. Meets with personnel form Special Services to discuss placement of special-needs students.
  9. Confers with teachers concerning students.
  10. Schedules and participates in staffings and conferences as requested by parents, teachers, students, or counselors.
  11. Facilitates communication between teachers and parents by asking for academic and disciplinary reports, arranging conferences, and getting information to and from teachers.
  12. Keeps cumulative records, personal histories, grades, test results and other pertinent records.
  13. Refers students to other agencies or departments, i.e., speech, reading, psychological services and social work.
  14. Registers, schedules, and provides orientation for all new students as they enroll throughout the year.
  15. Conducts group sessions when deemed appropriate.
  16. Identifies potential school drop-outs and counsels them appropriately.
  17. Provides job information to the students as it becomes available.
  18. Conducts professional consultations with colleagues from other specialized services.
  19. Perform all other duties reasonably related to position as may be assigned by the Principal and/or Assistant Principal.

Qualifications

  1. Teaching certificate for the particular position as required by the State.
  2. Must be familiar with the use of computers including but not limited to electronic mail, the Internet, word processing, and electronic spreadsheets (Microsoft Office).
  3. Establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with those contacted in the course of work (students, parents, and staff).
  4. Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
  5. Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner

Compensation:

Fully Board Paid Medical, Dental, and Vision available.


Per the negotiated contract between McLean County Unit 5 and the United Five Education Association, for the 2023-2024 school year the starting salary range for candidates with a Bachelor's Degree is $40,000 - $54,304 and is based upon Education and Certified Teaching experience.  Candidates with a Master's Degree is $43,819 - $64,946 and is based upon Education and Certified Teaching experience.
