Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Duties

DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments on a regular basis.
  2. Transcribe print into Braille in an effort to help visually impaired students communicate better.
  3. Transcribe Braille into print in an effort to help visually impaired students communicate better.
  4. Coordinate low vision clinics to help facilitate communication and services to low vision students.
  5. Coordinate the ordering, maintenance, and inventory of all specialized equipment/materials related to the field.
  6. Prepare paperwork for students’ IEP meetings and participate in IEP meetings on a regular basis.
  7. Complete quarterly progress reports on the students served.
  8. Collect and monitor data regarding student progress.
  9. Establish and maintain open and frequent communication with students’ parents.
  10. Maintain regular communication with all stakeholders regarding student progress.
  11. Conduct in-service and professional development training for staff members, parents, and students.
  12. Consult with teachers, parents, colleagues, administrators, and outside professionals as needed.
  13. Conduct student observations when necessary.
  14. Complete paperwork necessary for Medicaid reimbursement.
  15. Engage in continuing education and professional development activities in order to stay informed about the most recent issues pertinent to the field.
  16. Maintain confidentiality at all times with regard to students and student information. 
  1. Abide by all applicable laws and comply with all BASSC policies and procedures (e.g. business department, attendance, computer/internet, schedule, internal paperwork, etc.).
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 EVALUATION

            Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions contained in the

            “BASSC Procedures and Guidelines for Administrative and Staff Evaluations”.

Qualifications

Illinois Type 10 School Certificate with Visual Impairment Endorsement

Experience working with visually impaired students

Knowledge of the equipment pertinent to blind education

Must meet requirements for IL reimbursement for this position

Highly dependable with excellent communication skills

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director, in his/her sole and exclusive role, may find appropriate and acceptable

Salary/Benefits

Work Days and Salary  

  • Minimum salary $45,850 to $62,700
  • Signing bonus of $4,000 available with three year commitment
  • BASSC paid pension (TRS) contribution in addition to salary
  • Length of work year:  185 days

 

 Contractual Benefits 

  • Sick leave and personal leave days
    • 14 sick leave and 3.5 personal leave days per year from start date through year 17
    • 16 sick leave and 3.5 personal leave days per year for employees with 18 – 25 years of service
    • 20 sick leave and 3.5 personal leave days per year for employees with 26+ years of service
    • Sick and personal leave not used in the year of service for which it is granted shall accumulate as sick leave.
  • Single health insurance paid 100% by the district
  • Please note Family insurance information is based on 2025-2026 School year rates:
    • Family health insurance paid 90% by the district
    • Employee family coverage costs employee $190.00 per month. 
  • Personal travel budget for professional development
  • Work mileage reimbursed at the IRS rate
