Special Education Teacher

Duties

As:  Teacher of Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders

 

  1. Prepare and carry out daily lesson plans in accordance with each student’s IEP and the Illinois Learning Standards.
  2. Take measures to provide for the safety, welfare, and security of each student.
  3. Prepare, manage, and implement behavior modification plans and create the necessary supporting documentation.
  4. Prepare the necessary paperwork for each student’s IEP and attend and actively participate in IEP meetings.
  5. Collect data pertaining to the students’ functioning and progress.
  6. Team with social workers and paraprofessionals to help meet the students’ needs.
  7. Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
  8. Maintain communication with parents, case workers, and probation officers as needed to better meet the students’ needs.
  9. Supervise the paraprofessional(s) assigned to the applicable classroom.
  10. Collect data and organize information for the Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) when applicable.
  11. Perform daily bus duty (e.g. supervising the students to/from the building as they get on/off the school bus and intervening as necessary).
  12. Monitor student lunch time daily.
  13. Attend and participate in weekly team and staff meetings.
  14. Appropriately implement Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) principles as needed.
  15. Remain current and updated with regard to the applicable teacher certification issues.
  16. Engage in continuing education and professional development activities in order to stay informed about the most recent issues pertinent to the field.
  17. Participate in program-specific training as required by the supervising administrator.
  18. Abide by all applicable laws and comply with all BASSC policies and procedures (e.g. business department, attendance, computer/internet, schedule, internal paperwork, etc.).
  19. Maintain confidentiality at all times with regard to students and student information.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 
As:  Teacher of Students with Developmental Disabilities

 

  1. Create a safe and educationally appropriate environment for instruction.
  2. Plan and implement a special education program that addresses the students’ IEPs.
  3. Prepare the paperwork that is necessary for students’ IEP meetings.
  4. Participate actively in the IEP meetings of the students served.
  5. Provide case management services for the students to ensure that the IEP-prescribed services are being met.
  6. Collect data pertaining to the students’ functioning and progress.
  7. Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
  8. Prepare and carry out daily lesson plans in accordance with each student’s IEP and the Illinois Learning Standards.
  9. Design the overall curriculum for the applicable classroom.
  10. Supervise the paraprofessional(s) assigned to the applicable classroom.
  11. Attend and participate in meetings related to program-specific topics on an as needed basis.
  12. Communicate regularly with parents regarding the students’ progress and needs.
  13. Attend meetings as needed with support staff, district representatives, administration, and colleagues.
  14. Complete all paperwork related to the management of the applicable classroom and equipment.
  15. Integrate all related services necessary to serve the students most effectively.
  16. Schedule each student’s instructional day with regard to class time, related services, inclusion, community activities, etc.
  17. Collect data and organize information for the Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) when applicable.
  18. Assist in meeting the personal needs of each student (e.g. toileting, feeding, etc.).
  19. Provide medical assistance for the students, with consultation from the school nurse, as needed (e.g. monitoring seizures, tube feedings, medications, etc.).
  20. Remain current and updated with regard to the applicable teacher certification issues.
  21. Engage in continuing education and professional development activities in order to stay informed about the most recent issues pertinent to the field.
  22. Participate in program-specific training as required by the supervising administrator.
  23. Abide by all applicable laws and comply with all BASSC policies and procedures (e.g. business department, attendance, computer/internet, schedule, internal paperwork, etc.).
  24. Maintain confidentiality at all times with regard to students and student information.
  25. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

As:  Teacher of Students with Autism

 

  1. Create a safe and educationally appropriate environment for instruction.
  2. Instruct students using methodologies that are research-based.
  3. Prepare and carry out daily lesson plans in accordance with each student’s IEP and the Illinois Learning Standards.
  4. Remain current with regard to laws and guidelines pertaining to special education and active case management.
  5. Participate as a collaborative team member with regular education and related service staff members and integrate the necessary services to serve the students most effectively.
  6. Observe, assess, and target specific Autism core deficits for remediation.
  7. Develop instructional methods (steps) to achieve the students’ IEP goals and objectives.
  8. Provide the appropriate environmental conditions to meet the students’ goals and objectives.
  9. Train and supervise the paraprofessional(s) assigned to the applicable classroom.
  10. Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
  11. Ensure accountability through IEP-based teaching and data collection.
  12. Document student progress by tracking the appropriate goals and objectives.
  13. Delegate the appropriate duties to classroom paraprofessionals in an effort to address the students’ IEP goals and objectives (e.g. grooming, hygiene, constructing PECS, cleaning, making copies, etc.).
  14. Ensure that the students’ fundamental and educational needs are met (e.g. toileting, feeding, etc.).
  15. Collect data and organize information for the Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) when applicable.
  16. Develop and appropriately implement student Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  17. Seek guidance from other staff members, colleagues, and supervisors as needed.
  18. Prepare paperwork for and actively participate in IEP meetings for the students served.
  19. Develop daily schedules and activities for the students in the applicable classroom.
  20. Assist and guide the students through all aspects of their educational day (e.g. instruction, recess, lunch, bus duty, community outings, etc.).
  21. Appropriately implement Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) principles as needed.
  22. Remain current and updated with regard to the applicable teacher certification issues.
  23. Engage in continuing education and professional development activities in order to stay informed about the most recent issues pertinent to the field.
  24. Participate in program-specific training as required by the supervising administrator.

EVALUATION

            Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions contained in the

            “BASSC Procedures and Guidelines for Administrative and Staff Evaluations”.

Qualifications

Must possess LBS1 licensure and meet IL reimbursement requirements for this position

Experience with multiple disability categories is preferred

Highly dependable with excellent communication skills

Salary/Benefits

Work Days and Salary 

  • Minimum salary $45,850 to $62,700
  • Signing bonus of $3,000 available with two year commitment
  • BASSC paid pension (TRS) contribution in addition to salary
  • Length of work year:  185 days

 

 Contractual Benefits 

  • 14 sick leave and 3.5 personal leave days per year
  • Single health insurance paid 100% by the district
  • Please note Family insurance information is based on 2025-2026 School year rates:
    • Family health insurance paid 90% by the district
    • Employee family coverage costs employee $190.00 per month.
