Duties

Duties & Responsibilities

       Leadership & Training

  • Provides leadership, training, and support to the district’s school nursing staff to ensure they stay informed about policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Conducts and leads state-mandated trainings and other professional development sessions.
  • Coordinate IEP designated nurses for conducting evaluations and health related services for students with disabilities and ensuring compliance of IEP and 504 medical plans for all buildings
     
  • Compliance & Documentation
    • Assigns and directs school nurses in maintaining accurate records and completing state reporting requirements.
    • Reviews immunization records, health assessments, and student health data, ensuring accurate documentation.
    • Approves all state-level health reports for compliance and accuracy.
    • Works with the Director of Special Education to ensure compliance with federal and state health mandates.
       
  • Student Health & Support Services
    • Provides first aid, illness and emergency care, health assessments, and referrals.
    • Conducts student and staff health screenings, recommending interventions as needed.
    • Provides counseling and follow-up support for students with disabilities as outlined in IEPs/504 plans.
    • Assists special education students in adapting to physical, emotional, or health-related challenges.
    • Responds to school crises, including deaths, suicides, and traumatic events, offering intervention and support.
       
  • Medication & Health Management
    • Develops and oversees medication protocols, ensuring safe storage, administration, documentation, and monitoring.
    • Coordinates district compliance with communicable disease regulations and public health requirements.
       
  • Collaboration & Community Engagement
    • Collaborates with IEP teams, service providers, and community agencies to support student health needs.
    • Represents school health services in meetings, committees, and district initiatives.
    • Assists with state and federal-mandated health screenings, ensuring follow-up care for students with vision, hearing, growth, and developmental concerns.
       
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Provides backup support and substitutes for school nurses as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Type 73 School Nurse Certification or BSN or Registered Nurse (RN) with a bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a school setting
  • 3–5 years of medical supervision experience (preferred)
  • CPR certification (required)
  • Spanish-speaking (preferred)

Salary/Benefits

Pursuant to Salary Schedule set forth in the Teacher Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Position Summary

The Lead Nurse provides leadership, coordination, and support for the district's nursing team while overseeing comprehensive healthcare programs that promote student well-being. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality school health services, fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students. The Lead Nurse performs duties in accordance with the standards of professional school nursing practice, Illinois State Board of Education policies and procedures, and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act.  This position will be housed at Piper Elementary School and will also serve as the building nurse for .3 of the responsibilities.

TERMS: 10 month 
 
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education / Assistant Director of Special Education and Building Princip
