School Counselor
Job Description

Purpose: The major functions of the school counselor are to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. School counselors are professional school advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. In collaboration and teamwork with other educators, parents or guardians, and the community, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students in Byron Community Unit School District 226 have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills at the highest level as productive members of society.

The school counselor’s role incorporates the mission of the Byron Community Unit School District by emphasizing the priority to ensure all students develop the skills, knowledge, and beliefs necessary to excel in their chosen fields while living enriched and rewarding lives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. MAJOR FUNCTION: DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM
• Plans, organizes, and delivers school counseling program
• Discusses the counseling department management system and the program action plans with the school administration

2. MAJOR FUNCTION: ADVOCACY AND LEADERSHIP
• Promotes academic success of every student
• Promotes equity and access for every student
• Understands reform issues and works to close to achievement gap.
• Collaborates with teachers, parents, administrators, and the community to promote academic success of students
• Promotes effective teams by encouraging collaboration among all school staff

3. MAJOR FUNCTION: DELIVERY OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM
Guidance Curriculum
• Implements the school guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning
• Develops materials and instructional strategies to meet student needs and school goals

Individual Student Planning
• Implements the individual planning component of the ASCA National Model by guiding individuals and groups of students and their parents and guardians through the development of educational and career plans through the establishment of goals and planning skills

Responsive Services
• Provides responsive services through the effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation, and referral skills
o Counsels individual students and small groups of students with identified needs and concerns
o Consults effectively with parents or guardians, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals
o Implements an effective counseling referral process with administrators, teachers, and other school personnel
System Support
• Provides a comprehensive and balanced school counseling program
• Provides support for other school programs
• Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession

4. MAJOR FUNCTION: ACCOUNTABILITY
• Collects and analyzes data to guide counseling program direction and emphasis
• Works with members of the counseling team and with the principal to clarify how results are shared
• Uses data to recommend systemic change in policy and procedures that limit or inhibit academic achievement

Qualifications

Appropriate PEL Licensure through the state of Illinois
