Position / Title: Literacy Specialist

Function / Position Summary
The Literacy Specialist will lead school staff in implementing literacy best practices in core instruction with an emphasis in grades K-2, coach staff as they provide interventions for students who need more support for learning within the framework of MTSS, and provide small group push-in or pull-out literacy support for students. The Literacy Specialist has proven expertise in implementing the Reading and Writing Workshop model. The Literacy Specialist is part of the leadership team(s) of the school, and will provide professional development to all staff around literacy and best instructional practices that result in higher levels of student achievement
 
Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers, support staff, and parents.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to administer assessments and identify students who would benefit from literacy support.
  • Lead school staff in professional learning of literacy best practices, instructional strategies for core instruction, and how to implement district resources to maximize student achievement.
  • Provide school staff with best practice support and instructional strategies for core instruction in literacy.
  • Take an active leadership role and provide a literacy lens on school leadership teams. (U- 46 Rising Committee, School Improvement Team, PLCs).
  • Provide communication about district and school-wide practices to the school staff around literacy.
  • Provide job-embedded professional learning in the classroom for teachers through co- teaching and support of Tier 1 instruction.
  • Participate in and contribute to leadership team(s) meetings.
  • Support the collection and analysis of implementation data to ensure fidelity of implementation of identified strategies around literacy.
  • Engage with teachers in their classrooms through co-teaching, including but not limited to parallel teaching and pull-out/push in teaching during small group instruction.
  • Model lessons and best practices for literacy instruction in the classrooms with teachers.
  • Participate in and contribute to monthly Literacy Specialist meetings and individual coaching sessions throughout the year.
  • Demonstrate and model a solid understanding of how literacy learning can be maximized through cooperative grouping, learning targets, and academic teaming in order to result in higher levels of student achievement in alignment with U-46 Rising.
  • This position may require traveling.

Education

  • Master’s degree in Education preferred
  • PEL with Reading Specialist Endorsement (K-9) or (K-12) or Reading Teacher endorsement.
  • Three years experience in educational setting in a role supporting Literacy preferred.

Experience / Knowledge

  • Sound literacy knowledge, proactive coaching skills, dependability, knowledge of current best teaching practices required.
  • Demonstrated openness to monitoring the best practice implementation for literacy and participating in leadership team(s) in order to ensure updated, culturally and linguistically responsive practices.
  • Desire and motivation to be grounded in best practices are culturally and linguistically responsive.
  • Strong knowledge of literacy and at least 3 years of experience with literacy best practice implementation is preferred.
  • Fluent verbal and written English skills.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Knowledge of assessment data.
  • Knowledge of effective small group literacy instruction.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work on a computer over a major portion of the day.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Terms of Employment

  • This is a 10-month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

 

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Education preferred
