Duties

JOB SUMMARY:  The library media specialist is responsible to the building Principal for: planning instructional lessons that meet the needs, interests and abilities of students as well as address state standards; creating an environment that is conducive to learning; and employing effective instructional strategies. In addition the Library Media Specialist is also responsible for providing an environment that fosters an appreciation of literature and literature sharing with students as well as assisting teachers with literature to support the 6-8 Curriculum.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Provide innovative instruction in the use of the media center and its

materials so that each contact with the media center is a growing

experience.

  • Coordinate activities designed to promote use and appreciation of LMC

resources.

  • Suggest materials to teachers for utilization in the classroom and media

center and encourages teacher to help in the process of selecting new

materials to supplement the educational program.

  • Interpret media center goals, accomplishments, and needs to the school

community and is a catalyst to school personnel to improve the use of the

media center.

  • Coordinate and participate in the planning and implementation of an

information skills continuum including information retrieval, and utilization

of resources.

  • Establish a safe atmosphere conducive to a positive learning environment.
  • Manage circulation of materials, media and equipment. Complete an

annual inventory, including AV equipment, of a designated portion of the

library materials and removes obsolete and worn materials from the

collection. Coordinate routine and annual maintenance of equipment.

Assess and collect fees for lost or damaged items.

  • Prepare bibliographies and lists of resources and coordinates a selection

of materials for reserve collections and special units of study.

  • Help students choose a variety of appropriate materials based on their

needs.

  • Make recommendations for maximum utilization of dollars as appropriated

as well as spent for the media center and keeps abreast of current

materials and evaluate, selects and requisitions new media materials.

  • Maintain a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media

materials and instructs teacher, library aides, and students in the use of

the system.

 

  • Schedule the use of the LMC and computer lab ensuring for efficient use

of facilities.

  • Coordinate technology needs for the LMC and for building providing

technical assistance to staff at the building level.

  • Utilizes and supports the use of the computer as an instructional resource.
  • Make recommendations for maximum utilization of dollars as appropriated

as well as spent for the media center.

  • Collaborate with teachers and serve on appropriate school and district

committees.

  • Supervise volunteers and/or aides in the performance of their duties.
  • Enforce and support District and School policies, philosophies and

objectives with students and parents.

  • Participate in professional development activities that improve the LMC

and provide an effective library resource program that supports the

mission, goals, and objectives of the school.

  • Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:          

  • Applicant must hold appropriate State of Illinois Elementary Certificate (Type 03) or Special Certificate (Type 10) with Library Media Specialist Endorsement
  • Previous experience as a media specialist or classroom teacher preferred
  • Masters Degree in Library Science preferred
  • Ability to provide instructional support in the areas of instructional technology, selection and implementation of materials needed for various study programs
  • Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of all media materials
  • Knowledge of staff development and program improvement activities
  • Ability to work closely with parents, teachers, and supervisors to establish effective communication

Salary/Benefits

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary is in accordance with the teacher salary schedule.  The District offers excellent fringe benefits, including life, health and dental insurance.

Additional Notes

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in an environment where unusual temperature, noise and hazards are relatively nonexistent. Work requires very infrequent lifting, pulling or pushing during the

normal performance of tasks and responsibilities.
