Duties
Purpose
The middle school dean of students provides leadership and direction in supporting and promoting a safe learning environment for each student.
Essential Functions
Under the direction of the principal, the dean of students:
- Coordinates student arrivals and dismissal processes and procedures and provides leadership to those providing supervision.
- Ensures availability to supervise during student arrival and dismissal.
- Ensures availability to supervise during lunch times.
- Demonstrates extensive knowledge and skill in social-emotional learning and student discipline.
- Supports principal in coordination of school-wide SEL programming.
- Acts in the stead of the principal when the principal and assistant principal are out of the building.
- Member of the Building Safety Team.
- Member of the Building Leadership Team (Building Council).
- Participates in discussions of the School Resilience Team at the direction of the principal.
- Supports principal in implementation of student discipline system.
- Monitors and addresses student tardy and attendance concerns.
- Supports principal in after hours event supervision.
- Supports the principal in ensuring effective building scheduling including but not limited to:
- specials adjustments
- testing schedules
- special event scheduling
- Takes initiative with the scheduling process, establishing meetings and check-ins with the principal/assistant principal to collaborate and ensure that an informed process is completed, in a timely fashion.
- Maintains communication and collaborates with the administration, information services, and the other two middle schools to ensure that the needs of the school are being considered along with those of the district.
- Fosters an environment in which students exhibit respect for the dean and contribute to high levels of civility among all members of the class/school.
- Takes a leadership role in maintaining and supervising a safe learning environment.
- Knowledgeable of school safety plans and effectively communicates plans to students and colleagues.
- Conducts and evaluates safety procedures and continuously looks for ways to improve safety for students and staff.
- Collects and analyzes data to use to monitor and assess student behavior and management systems not only as a means to impact a positive culture for learning, but also as a tool to develop new programs or systems to enhance the learning experience for students.
- Establishes parent groups, volunteer opportunities, culturally appropriate events or other mechanisms to involve parents in the educational programs of the school that support a positive learning environment.
- Demonstrates strong professional ethics and can be counted on to hold the highest standards of honesty, integrity and confidentiality and to advocate for students, taking a leadership role with colleagues.
