Duties

• Effectively and impartially facilitate communication among deaf and hard of hearing students and others in the educational environment.
• Interpreting services at all school levels according to individual need.
• Prepare for daily classroom lessons and activities for the purpose of clear understanding and interpretation. 
• Reinforce previously taught concepts under the direction of a teacher for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Provide interpreting services to students at their IEP meetings. 
• Interpret at the student’s functional language level.
• Voice interpret for the deaf or hard of hearing students so that they can fully and freely participate in the instructional process. 
• Work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing to provide instruction on how to effectively use an interpreter’s services based on their level. 
• Accompany students on field trips or to activities which occur during school hours and in conjunction with school plans to ensure that access to effective communication is available.  
• Interpret or transliterate in a mode that reflects the student’s language use, as outlined in the student’s IEP.
• Work with the classroom teacher to adapt classroom/school activities to promote participation of deaf or hard of hearing individuals.
• Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not.
• Ensure incidental information is interpreted.
• Provide plans for a substitute interpreter, as needed.
• Position themselves appropriately to assure visual access to educational content.
• Ahere to school policy in regards to attire and ensuring that attire is appropriate for the visual communication needs of the student.
• Advocate for the needs of the student and the interpreter in all school settings.
• Support the educational goals and outcomes as defined by the student’s IEP.
• Provide the educational team with feedback on how the student is using an interpreter.
• Assist in facilitating independence by continuously transitioning responsibilities to the student. 

• Carry out behavior or individual behavior management programs: handle routine misbehaviors according to procedures outlined by the teacher.

• Perform classroom duties (lunch duty, recess duty, etc.) only when interpreting is required.
• Maintain flexibility regarding schedule changes in situations of student and/or interpreter absences.

• Present in-service training to classroom/school personnel about the roles and responsibilities of the interpreter and/or deaf/hard of hearing related issues.
• Ahere to the Code of Professional Conduct as outlined by the NAD/RID/NAIE.
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

- High School Diploma or equivalent

- EIPA score of 3.5 or higher

- Valid certification from the RID or valid Illinois Board of Evaluation of Interpreters (IL BEI) Basic Certification or higher issued   by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission

- Ability to interpret/transliterate in classes for assigned Deaf/Hard of Hearing students

- Working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
